The biggest cost driver is never technology — it is how much is still undecided. Each unanswered question in the brief becomes a contingency somewhere in the quote. A vendor that has no visibility into the edge cases must assume the more expensive option. Putting two weeks into a proper discovery frequently cuts the total by far more than haggling over hourly rates.

Third-party integrations remain another reliable source of cost. A feature that touches only your own data is easy to estimate; the same screen wired into a payment provider and a CRM is a different problem.
